Ellijay History

“Ellijay” is believed to come from the Indian word meaning “many waters” or “new ground.” Some claim that the origin of the word is from the name of an Indian chief. Ellijay was once inhabited by the Cherokee Indians, serving as a village and trade center. Settlers began to inhabit the city in the 1830’s. The city began to expand rapidly after the construction of a railroad and railroad bridge over the Cartecay River was completed in 1884. By the 1920’s, Ellijay was shipping apples outside of Gilmer County. Today the city is a popular tourist destination known for its quaint downtown square, mountain scenery and unique shops.
